Make an autumn project at Cambridge’s Old Post Office: membership, files and costs
Cambridge’s Old Post Office makerspace is on the third floor. Equipment use needs a full teen or adult library membership and a signed waiver. Choose the machine and prepare the design first. Supplies, pickup production and booking each have their own rules.

Start with a small project you can finish
For an autumn project at the Old Post Office, start with a small design and the right material. The library’s tools can help you make it, but a finished file and a realistic deadline make the visit much smoother.
A February 2025 local low-cost outing discussion recommended the Old Post Office makerspace. It is a useful rainy-day idea for someone who wants to make something rather than browse shops. Free entry does not mean every material or production job costs nothing.
Choose one task, such as an engraved item, a printed design or a sewing project. Read the equipment guide before buying material. A machine that can make a large object is not a promise that your first design will work on the first try.
A June 2023 cabinet-project question shows why it helps to name the job before naming the machine. A laser cutter may sound promising, but the material, thickness, working area and assembly all matter. Experience with a 3D printer does not answer those questions. Ask staff about the particular design and approved material before buying stock or arriving with a large piece that cannot be used. The equipment list is a starting point for that conversation.

Check your access and design file
The makerspace requires a full teen or adult membership and a waiver for equipment use. Contact staff at 226-533-2767 to ask questions or reserve. The listed tools include laser cutters, 3D printers, a large-format printer, Cricut machines and an embroidery machine.
For pickup work, the library accepts specified file types and complete instructions. Staff do not design the project for you. Include the required size, material and contact details so there is no guessing about the finished item.
For a first project, choose something where a test teaches you what to change. A small design can reveal scale, spacing or file problems without using the full material allowance. Keep a copy of the original file and label the revised version clearly. Staff need a production-ready instruction, not a general idea for a gift. If you want design instruction as well as access, ask which current support or program fits before booking equipment.
Build time and material costs into the plan
The pickup service accepts a maximum of three jobs per member each week and aims to complete work within seven days, with longer times possible. A last-minute gift needs a backup. Approved own-material laser jobs have a listed $2 fee, and other material costs vary.
The branch lists a staff-development closure on Friday, October 23. Keep the building hours separate from machine availability. The benefit is access to tools and support. The limit is shared time, preparation and a result that depends on the design.
Residents in the 2024 appreciation discussion liked Cambridge’s libraries for creative possibilities as well as their architecture. The February 2025 low-cost outing thread pointed to the makerspace for the same reason. It can be an interesting afternoon without becoming a large project. Work out the membership and waiver first, then choose between producing something during an appropriate visit and using the pickup service. Those routes have different timing and preparation needs.
The pickup limit is three jobs per member per week, with a seven-day target that can run longer. Plan backward from the date you need the object, including time to review a result and collect it. An approved own-material laser job has a listed $2 fee; that does not make every machine, material or job a $2 service. Ask for the cost of your exact work. Keep the October 23 closure separate from normal equipment availability when setting a deadline.
