Application review and pickup
What is the application sequence?
Complete the ServiceOntario Marriage Licence Portal application, then search for City of Cambridge to book a pickup appointment. Both parties complete the application, and the wedding date must be included. Review the information before submitting it.
What happens if documents are missing?
The City reviews the submission before confirming the appointment. Incorrect information or missing documents means the appointment will not proceed and the application must be resubmitted. Errors at the appointment require another booking, subject to calendar availability.
Where do I bring original documents?
Bring the confirmed original documents to Service Cambridge at City Hall, 50 Dickson Street, first floor, at the scheduled time. The licence counter is different from Historic City Hall at 46 Dickson Street, where municipal ceremonies take place.

Identification, translations and cost
What identification does each applicant need?
Each person needs two approved original pieces showing birthdate, with at least one photo ID. Listed examples include a birth certificate, valid Ontario driver's licence, change-of-name certificate, record of immigrant landing, citizenship card or valid passport.
Which cards and translations are refused or required?
Ontario health cards and SIN cards are not accepted. All identification must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation. Confirm the actual two documents for each person before making the appointment.
What is the Cambridge licence fee?
The marriage licence costs $187. The City accepts cash, Visa, Mastercard or debit for this service. A licence fee is separate from any ceremony, officiant or witness fee, so do not treat the licence price as the full wedding cost.

Previous marriages and separate ceremonies
What documents are needed after a Canadian divorce?
Provide an original or certified true copy of the Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce. The City does not accept ordinary photocopies, a Divorce Judgment or Decree Nisi. Bring the accepted final document for every applicant whose previous marriage ended in divorce.
What if a divorce occurred outside Canada?
Authorization from the Registrar General is required before applying in Ontario. Cambridge lists the signed application, sealed certified divorce document with translation if needed, statements of sole responsibility and an Ontario lawyer's legal opinion. Ask the clerk about the actual case before booking.
What are the age and consent requirements?
Ontario requires both applicants to be at least 16 when the licence is issued. Applicants aged 16 or 17 need the required parent or guardian consent, or a court order, unless an applicable previous-marriage exception applies. Use the provincial consent instructions and ask the Cambridge clerk about documents before booking.
How do I arrange a separate City ceremony?
Contact clerks@cambridge.ca or 519-623-1340. Historic City Hall ceremonies have separate booking, capacity and fees. The 2026 page lists a $164 administrative fee, $242 officiant fee and $35 for each required witness, in addition to the licence.
