Bank details and automatic payments

Which number do I use for a bank payment?

Use the property tax roll number on your Cambridge tax notice. Payment is available at a bank branch or through online and telephone banking. Do not use a water account number for the property tax payee.

How does the City date a bank payment?

Cambridge recognizes the bank's electronic payment date, regardless of when the transfer is received. If paying on the due date, submit early enough for the bank to record it that same day. A bank cutoff can move the effective date.

Can payments be withdrawn automatically?

The City offers several pre-authorized plans, set up through MyTax. Choose the plan matching your payment needs and confirm enrollment. A new application does not mean an earlier unpaid installment has automatically been covered.

Credit cards, counters and cheques

Can I pay property taxes by credit card?

Yes, through the City's linked third-party service online or by calling 1-877-810-7295. The convenience fee is 1.75% of the total payment. This is separate from the City Hall cashier, which does not accept credit cards for tax bills.

Where is the in-person tax counter?

The Administrative Offices cashier is on the main floor at 50 Dickson Street, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. It accepts cash, cheque and Interac for tax payments. Bring the tax notice and correct account details.

Receipt dates and overdue balances

When must mailed or dropped payments arrive?

The City must receive them by the due date. It accepts post-dated cheques dated for installment due dates, but says those cheques cannot be withdrawn from the account file once received. Plan ahead before submitting several dated cheques.

What are the late-payment charges?

The City adds 1.25% on the third day of default, then another 1.25% on the first day of each month until paid. Received payments go first to interest, penalties and other charges, then to the oldest overdue taxes.

How do I keep or replace a receipt?

Keep the notice for income-tax records. Submit the full notice with payment if requesting a receipt. Duplicate receipts or statements have a fee, while MyTax offers free account information and a printable electronic statement. A cheque receipt depends on the cheque clearing.

What happens if my cheque is returned?

A returned cheque adds a fee to the tax account. Contact the Tax Office to confirm the balance and arrange replacement payment. An uncleared cheque does not settle the account, and penalties can continue on overdue taxes.
